Roof Insulation Portsmouth
Professional Roof Insulation in Portsmouth
At Loft Insulation Specialists, we help Portsmouth homeowners cut heating bills and stay warmer with professional roof insulation, fitted at rafter level to meet Part L building regulations. With over 40 years of experience across Hampshire, we know the city’s roofs — the heavy Welsh slate of the Victorian terraces in Southsea, Fratton and Cosham, where heat escapes fast through an uninsulated roofline.
Heat rises, and up to 35% of your home’s warmth can be lost through the roof. We insulate between and over the rafters with 300mm Knauf Earthwool or slimline Superfoil to reach a 0.16 W/m²K U-value, keeping habitable lofts and room-in-roof spaces comfortable year-round and trimming around £200–£400 a year off bills.
We handle the full building control process for you, so there is nothing to arrange yourself. Every job starts with a free, no-obligation survey and a fixed-price quote — no high-pressure sales, no jargon, just straightforward advice.

How Portsmouth homeowners benefit from Roof Insulation
At Loft Insulation Specialists, we fit roof insulation, one of the most effective upgrades available, on a Portsmouth home. Heat rises, and without proper insulation at roof level much of the energy you pay for escapes straight through the structure — a real issue in the city’s older slate-roofed terraces and converted lofts. Whether you have a pitched roof, a flat roof, or a mix of both, we insulate between and over the rafters with Knauf Earthwool or Superfoil multifoil to suit the build, targeting a 0.16 W/m²K U-value that meets Part L of the Building Regulations. We will recommend the right material and depth after a proper look at your roof.
Why Portsmouth Homes Need Roof Insulation
An uninsulated or poorly insulated roof can account for a large proportion of heat loss from your Portsmouth home. Installing roof insulation to current standards reduces the amount of energy needed to maintain a comfortable temperature, which directly lowers your heating bills. It also improves the energy performance rating of your property, which can be a factor in property valuations and sales. For Portsmouth homeowners, roof insulation is a practical improvement that delivers ongoing savings.
Knauf Earthwool Mineral Wool Insulation
Knauf Earthwool is a mineral wool insulation product that we install between and over roof rafters. It is fitted to a depth of 300mm to achieve a U-value of 0.16 W/m²K. Earthwool is a proven product with excellent thermal and acoustic performance. It is non-combustible and has a long service life. For Portsmouth properties with sufficient rafter depth or where the roof space is not being used as living space, Earthwool is typically the most cost-effective choice, priced between £900 to £1,200.
Superfoil Reflective Multifoil Insulation
Superfoil is a multifoil insulation product that achieves high thermal performance in a much thinner profile than traditional mineral wool. This makes it particularly suitable for Portsmouth properties where rafter depth is limited or where maximising usable space is important. Superfoil is installed between rafters and provides effective thermal resistance while also acting as a radiant barrier. It is priced between £1,200 and £1,800 for most installations.
Building Regulations and Certification
Roof insulation work in Portsmouth must comply with Part L of the Building Regulations, which sets minimum thermal performance standards. Our installations target a U-value of 0.16 W/m²K, meeting current requirements. We handle the building regulations notification process on your behalf, ensuring that the work is properly recorded. This is important for future property transactions, as evidence of building regulations compliance may be required during the sale process.
Warranties and Long-Term Performance
Both Knauf Earthwool and Superfoil products carry manufacturer warranties, and our installation work comes with a warranty of 10 to 25 years depending on the product and installation type. Properly installed roof insulation will maintain its thermal performance for decades with minimal maintenance. For Portsmouth homeowners, this means long-term energy savings and improved comfort without the need for ongoing attention.

Most of Portsmouth is located on Portsea Island, off the south coast of England in the Solent, making Portsmouth the only city in England not located primarily on the mainland. The city is located 22 miles (35 km) south-east of Southampton, 50 miles (80 km) west of Brighton and Hove and 74 miles (119 km) south-west of London. With a population last recorded at 208,100, it is the most densely populated city in the United Kingdom. Portsmouth forms part of the South Hampshire urban area with Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Eastleigh and Southampton.
Portsmouth’s history can be traced to Roman times and it has contained a significant Royal Navy dockyard and base for centuries. Portsmouth was founded c. 1180 by Anglo-Norman merchant Jean de Gisors in the south-west area of Portsea Island, a location now known as Old Portsmouth. Around this time, de Gisors ordered the construction of a chapel dedicated to St Thomas Becket. This became a parish church by the 14th century. Portsmouth was established as a town with a royal charter on 2 May 1194. The city is home to the first drydock ever built. It was constructed by Henry VII in 1496.
Portsmouth has the world’s oldest dry dock, “The Great Stone Dock”; originally built in 1698, rebuilt in 1769 and presently known as “No.5 Dock”. The world’s first mass production line was established at the naval base’s Block Mills which produced pulley blocks for the Royal Navy fleet. By the early-19th century, Portsmouth was the most heavily fortified city in the world, and was considered “the world’s greatest naval port” at the height of the British Empire throughout Pax Britannica. By 1859, a ring of defensive land and sea forts, known as the Palmerston Forts, had been built around Portsmouth in anticipation of an invasion from continental Europe.
In the 20th century, Portsmouth achieved city status on 21 April 1926. During the Second World War, the city was bombed extensively in the Portsmouth Blitz, which resulted in the deaths of 930 people, and it was a pivotal embarkation point for the D-Day landings. In 1982, a large Royal Navy task force departed from Portsmouth for the Falklands War. Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia was formerly based in Portsmouth and oversaw the transfer of Hong Kong in 1997, after which Britannia was retired from royal service, decommissioned and relocated to Leith as a museum ship.
