Loft Insulation Portsmouth
Professional loft insulation for Portsmouth homeowners
At Loft Insulation Specialists, we help Portsmouth homeowners cut heating bills and stay warmer with correctly specified loft insulation. With over 40 years of experience across Hampshire, we know the city’s rooftops well — from the tightly packed Victorian terraces of Southsea, Fratton and Landport, with their heavy Welsh slate roofs and narrow loft voids, to the inter-war and post-war semis further north.
Up to 35% of your home’s heat can escape through an under-insulated roof. Even the older solid-wall terraces that aren’t suited to cavity insulation benefit straight away from a proper loft upgrade, so we top up or replace settled material to a 300mm Knauf Earthwool standard, or fit a Superfoil-led solution where headroom is tight. In dense terraced streets we take particular care to keep eaves ventilation clear so the roof can still breathe.
Because Portsmouth sits low on Portsea Island in salt-laden coastal air, we always check for damp, settled depth and blocked airflow before recommending the right upgrade. Every job comes with a free, no-obligation survey and a fixed-price quote — no high-pressure sales, no jargon, just straightforward advice.

How Portsmouth homeowners benefit from Loft Insulation
These are the five checks we use on loft insulation surveys in Portsmouth. They help us identify where heat is escaping, what condition your existing material is in, and what upgrade will deliver the best long-term value for your home.
Measure your current insulation depth
Use a tape measure between joists. Anything below around 100mm is typically underperforming against modern standards. We usually recommend 300mm total depth with Knauf Earthwool for strong thermal performance and lower bills.
Check for compression, gaps, and cold spots
Older insulation often flattens or separates over time, leaving cold bridges. We check compression, thin edges, and gaps around pipework, eaves, and hatch areas where heat loss is highest.
Assess moisture risk and loft ventilation
Good insulation must work with good airflow. We check soffit and eaves ventilation plus signs of moisture. Correct installation with breathable airflow prevents the condensation issues often caused by poor DIY work.
Common loft issues in Portsmouth homes
In Portsmouth’s older terraces, heavy Welsh slate roofs and shallow Victorian loft voids often hide thin, settled insulation and patchy coverage around the eaves. Salt-laden coastal air and past condensation can also leave roof timbers damp. We check depth, coverage and airflow together, then specify the right Knauf Earthwool or Superfoil build-up to fix the cause, not just the symptom.
Why Portsmouth homeowners choose Loft Insulation Specialists
With over 40 years of insulation experience — and recognition as the Best Insulation Installation Firm in Hampshire 2023 by the Southern Enterprise Awards — we know how to insulate exposed coastal lofts without trapping moisture. Every Portsmouth project starts with a free survey, uses Knauf Earthwool or slimline Superfoil to suit your roof space, and ends with clear documentation and aftercare advice — with no high-pressure sales or jargon.

How much does Loft Insulation cost in Portsmouth?
Our loft insulation typically costs between £600 and £1,500 for a standard three-bedroom Portsmouth home, or about £15–£22 per square metre including materials and labour. If old, contaminated insulation needs clearing and licensed disposal first, that adds around £650.
Terraced layouts, tight hatches and awkward access in the older streets can affect labour time, but we always give a fixed price after survey, with no hidden extras. As well as cutting bills, a proper upgrade can lift your EPC rating by 1–2 bands and add roughly £5,000–£15,000 to resale value in Hampshire.
Many homes recover the cost through lower heating demand over time. If you receive certain benefits or qualify under ECO4 or the Great British Insulation Scheme, we’ll check your eligibility and can carry out the work under those schemes.

Frequently asked questions
Take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions regarding our Loft Insulation services in Portsmouth.
How much can loft insulation save on energy bills in Portsmouth?
Loft insulation is one of the quickest wins for a Portsmouth home — up to 35% of your heat can escape through an under-insulated roof, so bringing the depth up to 300mm often delivers the fastest payback of any insulation measure. Exact savings depend on your loft size, current depth and heating habits, but most households notice warmer rooms and lower bills straight away.
Can I get an ECO4 loft insulation grant in Portsmouth?
You may qualify in Portsmouth if your home has a lower EPC rating (typically D–G) and your household receives qualifying benefits or meets income thresholds. We’ll help you check your eligibility rather than leaving you to navigate it alone, and once approved we can carry out the work under ECO4 or Great British Insulation Scheme funding.
Will loft insulation cause condensation in Portsmouth homes?
No, not when installed correctly. We maintain airflow at eaves and avoid blocking ventilation paths so moisture can escape safely. Because Portsmouth is close to the coast, we pay extra attention to ventilation and moisture control so performance is protected long term.
What insulation depth should I have in Portsmouth?
For most homes in Portsmouth, we recommend around 300mm total loft insulation depth to align with modern best practice and improve thermal performance. If your loft has less than 100mm, a top-up or replacement is usually needed to deliver meaningful bill and comfort improvements.
How quickly can you install loft insulation in Portsmouth?
Most standard installs in Portsmouth take 4-6 hours. Larger lofts, difficult access, or jobs that need cleanup and remedial prep can run into 1-3 days. We confirm timings during survey and provide a clear schedule before installation starts.

Most of Portsmouth is located on Portsea Island, off the south coast of England in the Solent, making Portsmouth the only city in England not located primarily on the mainland. The city is located 22 miles (35 km) south-east of Southampton, 50 miles (80 km) west of Brighton and Hove and 74 miles (119 km) south-west of London. With a population last recorded at 208,100, it is the most densely populated city in the United Kingdom. Portsmouth forms part of the South Hampshire urban area with Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Eastleigh and Southampton.
Portsmouth’s history can be traced to Roman times and it has contained a significant Royal Navy dockyard and base for centuries. Portsmouth was founded c. 1180 by Anglo-Norman merchant Jean de Gisors in the south-west area of Portsea Island, a location now known as Old Portsmouth. Around this time, de Gisors ordered the construction of a chapel dedicated to St Thomas Becket. This became a parish church by the 14th century. Portsmouth was established as a town with a royal charter on 2 May 1194. The city is home to the first drydock ever built. It was constructed by Henry VII in 1496.
Portsmouth has the world’s oldest dry dock, “The Great Stone Dock”; originally built in 1698, rebuilt in 1769 and presently known as “No.5 Dock”. The world’s first mass production line was established at the naval base’s Block Mills which produced pulley blocks for the Royal Navy fleet. By the early-19th century, Portsmouth was the most heavily fortified city in the world, and was considered “the world’s greatest naval port” at the height of the British Empire throughout Pax Britannica. By 1859, a ring of defensive land and sea forts, known as the Palmerston Forts, had been built around Portsmouth in anticipation of an invasion from continental Europe.
In the 20th century, Portsmouth achieved city status on 21 April 1926. During the Second World War, the city was bombed extensively in the Portsmouth Blitz, which resulted in the deaths of 930 people, and it was a pivotal embarkation point for the D-Day landings. In 1982, a large Royal Navy task force departed from Portsmouth for the Falklands War. Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia was formerly based in Portsmouth and oversaw the transfer of Hong Kong in 1997, after which Britannia was retired from royal service, decommissioned and relocated to Leith as a museum ship.
