Cavity Wall Insulation Portsmouth
Cavity wall insulation for Portsmouth homeowners
At Loft Insulation Specialists, we help Portsmouth homeowners cut heating bills and stay warmer with professionally installed Superbead EPS cavity wall insulation. With over 40 years of experience across Hampshire, we know the city’s housing inside out – from the tightly packed Victorian terraces of Southsea, Fratton and Landport to the post-war estates at Buckland, Paulsgrove and Leigh Park.
Up to 35% of your home’s heat can escape through uninsulated cavity walls. Our Superbead system injects bonded, water-repellent expanded polystyrene beads under controlled pressure to fill the cavity completely and lock warmth in. Cavity insulation suits the city’s inter-war and post-war homes with a clear wall cavity; if you live in a pre-1920 Victorian terrace with solid brick walls, cavity insulation won’t apply – and we’ll tell you that honestly at survey rather than sell you the wrong product.
Because so much of Portsmouth sits low on Portsea Island in salt-laden coastal air, we always assess wind-driven rain exposure and wall-tie condition before recommending a fill. Every job comes with a free, no-obligation survey and a fixed-price quote – no high-pressure sales, no jargon, just straightforward advice.

How Portsmouth homeowners benefit from Cavity Wall Insulation
These are the five key checks we carry out before installing cavity wall insulation in Portsmouth. They help us confirm your property is suitable for Superbead and ensure the installation delivers long-term performance.
Property age and construction type
Most homes built between 1920 and the late 1980s use cavity brick construction, making them ideal for Superbead insulation. These walls have two layers of brick separated by a narrow air gap, typically 50mm or more. If your property was built before 1920, it may have solid walls that need a different approach—we check this during survey.
Borescope cavity inspection
We use a borescope camera to inspect inside your wall cavity without disruption. This confirms cavity width, checks for debris or existing insulation, identifies any damp or structural issues, and verifies the cavity is suitable for Superbead injection.
Exposure to wind-driven rain
Exposure to wind-driven rain is one of the most important factors we assess. While most properties perform well with Superbead, we pay special attention to coastal and exposed locations. Superbead’s bonded, water-repellent beads are designed to resist moisture penetration even in higher-exposure areas.
How Superbead works in Portsmouth homes
Superbead is ideal for Portsmouth’s inter-war and post-war cavity-walled homes – the council estates and semis around Buckland, Paulsgrove, Cosham and Leigh Park built from the 1920s onward. Millions of tiny EPS beads are injected under pressure to fill the cavity completely, then bond together with a water-repellent additive to form a seamless, breathable thermal barrier that won’t slump or soak up moisture.

As well as cutting heating bills, filling your cavities can lift your EPC rating by 1–2 bands and add around 1–2% to your property’s value – useful in a city where nearly a third of homes are privately rented and must meet minimum energy standards. Frequently asked questions
Take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions regarding our Cavity Wall Insulation services in Portsmouth.
How much can cavity wall insulation save on energy bills in Portsmouth?
According to the Energy Saving Trust, cavity wall insulation saves a typical home around £150–£295 a year, and more for larger detached properties. Over 25 years that adds up to roughly £4,000–£7,000. Exact savings depend on your property’s size, wall area and heating habits, but with energy prices as they are the work usually pays for itself within a few years.
Does cavity wall insulation cause damp?
No, not when properly surveyed and installed. Around 96% of UK installations report zero moisture problems. Issues only arise when assessments are skipped or pre-existing problems like cracked render are missed. We carry out a full borescope inspection on every Portsmouth property before installation.
Is my Portsmouth home suitable for cavity wall insulation?
Most Portsmouth homes built between 1920 and the late 1980s have standard brick cavity walls and are well suited to Superbead – particularly the inter-war and post-war stock around Buckland, Cosham, Paulsgrove and Leigh Park. The city’s older Victorian terraces in Southsea, Fratton and central Portsmouth were generally built with solid brick walls, where cavity insulation doesn’t apply; if that’s your home, we’ll say so at survey and point you towards the right solution. Because Portsea Island is low-lying and exposed to salt-laden coastal air, we also check wall-tie condition and wind-driven rain exposure before confirming suitability.
What guarantee do you provide on cavity wall insulation?
All our cavity wall insulation work includes a 10-year IAA (Insulation Assurance Authority) backed guarantee covering materials and workmanship. This means you are protected even in the unlikely event that the installer is no longer trading.
How quickly can you install cavity wall insulation in Portsmouth?
Most installations in Portsmouth are completed in 2-4 hours. All work is carried out from outside your home, with drill holes sealed and colour-matched on the same visit. We confirm timings during survey and provide a clear schedule before installation starts.

Most of Portsmouth is located on Portsea Island, off the south coast of England in the Solent, making Portsmouth the only city in England not located primarily on the mainland. The city is located 22 miles (35 km) south-east of Southampton, 50 miles (80 km) west of Brighton and Hove and 74 miles (119 km) south-west of London. With a population last recorded at 208,100, it is the most densely populated city in the United Kingdom. Portsmouth forms part of the South Hampshire urban area with Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Eastleigh and Southampton.
Portsmouth’s history can be traced to Roman times and it has contained a significant Royal Navy dockyard and base for centuries. Portsmouth was founded c. 1180 by Anglo-Norman merchant Jean de Gisors in the south-west area of Portsea Island, a location now known as Old Portsmouth. Around this time, de Gisors ordered the construction of a chapel dedicated to St Thomas Becket. This became a parish church by the 14th century. Portsmouth was established as a town with a royal charter on 2 May 1194. The city is home to the first drydock ever built. It was constructed by Henry VII in 1496.
Portsmouth has the world’s oldest dry dock, “The Great Stone Dock”; originally built in 1698, rebuilt in 1769 and presently known as “No.5 Dock”. The world’s first mass production line was established at the naval base’s Block Mills which produced pulley blocks for the Royal Navy fleet. By the early-19th century, Portsmouth was the most heavily fortified city in the world, and was considered “the world’s greatest naval port” at the height of the British Empire throughout Pax Britannica. By 1859, a ring of defensive land and sea forts, known as the Palmerston Forts, had been built around Portsmouth in anticipation of an invasion from continental Europe.
In the 20th century, Portsmouth achieved city status on 21 April 1926. During the Second World War, the city was bombed extensively in the Portsmouth Blitz, which resulted in the deaths of 930 people, and it was a pivotal embarkation point for the D-Day landings. In 1982, a large Royal Navy task force departed from Portsmouth for the Falklands War. Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia was formerly based in Portsmouth and oversaw the transfer of Hong Kong in 1997, after which Britannia was retired from royal service, decommissioned and relocated to Leith as a museum ship.
